Reaping and Sowing

Galatians 6:7-9

"Do not be decieved: God can not be mocked.  A man reaps what he sows.  Whoever sows to please their flesh, from their flesh will reap destruction.  Whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.  Let us not become weary from doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Reaping and sowing are a couple of words that we don't really hear a whole lot anymore.  Some of us would call them "old words."  The two words refer to gardening or growing crops.  When you sow that refers to tending your crops and making sure they are cared for as they grow.  When you reap then you actually get to see the result of the sowing that you did.  The reaping is where you get to go and pick the good crops.

These two words are key to what we are talking about in this week's devo.  The first thing to remember is that we are going to reap what we sow.  That meaning, if we work just to promote ourselves and we are all about us and we sow a life that is not pleasing to God then we are not going to get anything out of it that we are going to like.  Sure, we may have things that make us feel good, temporarily, but a life of sin and selfishness will never reap a life pleasing to God or, according to our passage, eternal life.  However, if we live a life pleasing to God, and in service to him, the rewards for that are so much greater than any earthly reward we could ever imagine.

Finally, we can't be in a hurry.  God has everything worked for us already.  It doesn't matter what trial and temptation may come against us, God is in charge.  He tells us not to worry, he says don't become discouraged, don't be weary or tired.  Understand that he has everything under control and when everything is said and done, in his time, not our's, we will see the results of our life of faith.  Let me leave you with a few questions...

What are you sowing in your life?

Have you thought about what you life is going to be reaping?

What are you discouraged over?

Let go and give that to God, serve him, and let him take care of the rest.
